Our "Dining with David" at East Manor (now known as JIN) Luncheon hosted by Ameriprise Advisor, Matt Tosh was most enjoyable. Thanks Matthew and Sean Avery for hosting this special event.

Loyal Jordan Rich WBZ listeners shared the marvelous Cantonese, Szechwan, Mandarin and Japanese cuisine with a guided tour, selections and comments by David Cohen and, for many, it was the first time they had an opportunity to learn about the how and why of superb Asian delicacies.

Special guests Ken Solano of Northeastern University and CCTV and radio personality Clyde Hicks, enthusiastic host of "Sports Talk Live with Clyde Hicks" graced our afternoon ensuring great conversation for those lucky diners. Thanks, Ken and Clyde. Let's do it again.

2007 Restaurant Picks from M. David Cohen of the
"DINING WITH DAVID" TV SHOWS.  ENJOY!

Massachusetts (Boston Area)

Asiana Bistro (New March 2008) Ricky Ho, owner

200 Great Road, Bedford, MA

(781) 280-0707

Over the past 40 years, I have had the enormous joy of dining in 44 countries and experimenting with many wonderful cuisines leading to creating the Dining with David Cable Restaurant TV shows.  And every once in a while I accidentally stumble across a "diamond in the rough."  Ricky Ho and his charming and competent staff will provide a superb dining experience for you and your guests.  The Asian food selections vary in style and preparation and include Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Malaysian and Thai cuisine.  What are the really best items on this extensive menu?  Whatever you may prefer.  We tried hot and sour soup, wonton soup and 7 very different items.  Each was very flavorful, seasoned just right, served at the perfect temperature, and presented on tableware that was replaced after each course.  In today's restaurant market, with the economy hurting as it is, we need be cautious about where we go and how much we spend.  The prices here are well within moderate range, the ambiance crisp and clean and the food value exceptional.  As we say on Dining with David, if you see it on our show, GO, you'll have a terrific adventure.

BRAZZILLE (New in 2007)

85 Hollis Street, Framingham, MA 01702 (617) 697-8138

Marcelo S. Lima, Owner/Chef  mlima@brazzille.com

Where can you find "real food from Brazil" like that in Minas Gerais - Rodizio (barbeque) and authentic Caipirinha (Dona Beja Rum with fresh lime) drinks?  Take the time, drive to Framingham and relax at  the hands of Marcelo Lima.  And, don't miss the Rodizio pineapple and meats carved at your table.   If you have never been, don't be intimidated.  Let Marcelo show you how to become a regular at the hot or cold buffet; great take out, too.  Leave room for the Doce de Leite and Pudim Deleite!

Perfectly prepared churrascurias food in a comfortable setting.  Remember, you saw it here first!

Best consistently excellent food at truly reasonable prices for more than 25 years. How do they do it? David Overton and his Mom and Dad set the standard and it is realized every time they open their doors. Like spicy: try my favorite Spicy Cashew Chicken (ask them to add shrimp, I do). Very generous portions served with great warm brown and white bread. The Sweet Corn Tamale Cake appetizer is not spicy at all and south-of-the border delicious!

Try house specials The Diggitty (you choose all the toppings you want) or The Crime Dog with serious chili. With cold weather here, homemade soups each day, chowder on weekends, hit the spot. Stop in, say HI to Stephen, Peter and their friendly crew and order Andrea Berman's
Beach City BUZZ dog. You'll love it!

JEVELI'S RESTAURANT
(617) 567-9539
387 CHELSEA STREET, EAST BOSTON, MA 02128-1494

You've not had real old world veal parm until you visit Jeveli's; the escargot are amazingly wonderful, too. Moderate prices. Introduced to Jeveli's by Andrea Brown Berman; she chose it (and I agree) as Best Family Pick of the Century! Read Andrea's weekly column in the Revere Advocate.

Largest Great Asian Restaurant in New England
ROUTE 1 NORTH (20 FRANK BENNETT HWY), SAUGUS
(On Revere line just past Kappy's)

Formerly Wheylu's and East Manor, this enormous Chinese & Japanese spot will satisfy all your Asian cravings. Try the whole Maine 1-1/4 pound lobster prepared in several ways. I love their Dim Sum, featuring cha-shu-bow, shu-mai and ha-gow. The staff will welcome you and make you feel very comfortable. See Robyn Miller for that personal touch to plan your next banquet and catering event, wedding or corporate function.

LUBERTO'S PASTRY REVERE

LUNCH BOX DINER (Since May 2006)

(781) 321-2708

906 EASTERN AVENUE, MALDEN, MA 02148

Scott and Kristin Drago owners

Great breakfast served all day; but much, much more.

On the coldest of days, where can you find the best home made soup, sandwich and comfort food - mac & cheese, meatloaf, beef stew, American chop suey?  More than 30 hot and cold sandwiches, a dozen salads, and enough lunch and dinner choices to have a different one every day of the month.

GOOD?  Not just good, GREAT.  From chicken soup to clam chowda (their spelling) and home fries, it'll hit the spot.  Visit the Lunch Box Diner and you'll become a regular.  Ask Deborah for the day's specials.  She's a real charmer!

POPO'S HOT DOGS (Opposite Red Rock Bistro)
(781)592-9992
168 HUMPHREY STREET, SWAMPSCOTT, MA 01907
MARK SCAGLIONE

When Mark opened this one of several hot doggeries in honor of his Father (thus the name Popo's) he did everything first class. You'll make this one of your favorite places to grab a dog or two or four; all the dogs are all-beef kosher. Try the Boston with baked beans and grilled onions, my favorite. They have a really tasty vegetarian entry, too. Concept dogs with flair created and served by Mark and now the freshest, greatest lobster rolls and crabmeat rolls you'll find on the East Coast.  Mark was a lobsterman for many years and hand picks his lobsters just for you!

PUNJABI CAMBRIDGE
(617) 547-8272
225 HAMPSHIRE STREET, INMAN SQUARE, CAMBRIDGE, MA 02139

You won't believe this but here's what they do: they serve on metal trays with zero atmosphere, the food's still worth the stop and really inexpensive.

RED ROCK BISTRO (ACROSS FROM POPO'S)
(781) 595-1414
141 HUMPHREY STREET, SWAMPSCOTT, MA 01907
PAUL AND LOUISE PETERSIEL

Once in a lifetime, a dedicated restaurateur comes along and turns a sow's ear into a silk purse. Paul has transformed a simple clam shack into one of the finest dining establishments on this or any ocean. It's said that you cannot have great food and a great view. Trust me, Paul Petersiel has performed magic and you'll love every romantic minute you spend dining on the finest food and wine at the Red Rock Bistro. Dining with David made the arrangements and Kimberly and Ryan had such a fantastic time they are now engaged!

SALEM LOWE
203 Fort Avenue, Salem
(978) 744-6132
DAVID LOWE

For 75 years, this family has served up simple yet great Chinese food. I had my first chop suey sandwich in 1947 and matured to pepper steak and vegetarian sub gum fried rice in 1966. They're still my faves. Ask David Lowe to make a "Dining with David" special combo --- half pepper steak, half onion steak sandwich served in a container. Used to be 25 cents, now extravagantly it cost $2.45. Feed your family of four for $10.00. Perfect egg rolls and Crab Rangoon and their Duck Sauce is authentic!

SANTARPIO'S (Since 1919)
(617) 567-9871
111 EAST CHELSEA STREET, EAST BOSTON, MA 02128

Want a phenomenally memorable dining experience, call Brian, tell him when you're coming and let him "drive" the menu with his creative talent. And, look for "Dining with David" to be filming there soon. Our special gratitude to Billy Costa of the TV Diner cable show for introducing us to Chef Poe. TIJUANA (617) 884-7494
164 BROADWAY, CHELSEA, MA. 02150

Having visited Mexico many, many times, I was dying for authentic Mexican food in the Boston area when I discovered Tijuana. The mole is perfect and my personal fave is the Tijuana Signature Burrito. You won't find better Mexican this side of Rosarita Beach in Baja. AND, Saturday nights you'll be entertained at your table by their talented roving Mariachi Band (for which they add a whole dollar to your tab).

TOP OF THE HUB
(617) 536-1775
800 BOYLESTON STREET, BOSTON, MA 02199

Great view - sure. Great romantic atmosphere - sure. Great place to take family and colleagues visiting from out of town or that special lady or gent - sure. My fave is the baked brie with walnuts and caramelized fruit compote; one of the many shining stars at this scenic dining destination is bartender Arley who always has great drink suggestions. Last time it was a superb 1982 single malt Glenrothes Scotch. Sit at the bar and enjoy or at any window table for a romantic night on the town! What's the best table in the house? Any table . . . when you dine at Top of the Hub.

UNCLE PETE'S HICKORY BBQ REVERE
(781) 289-7427
72 SQUIRE ROAD, REVERE, MA 02151
PETE AND PHA CUCCHIARA

Many years across from Jeveli's in Easta Bost, Uncle Pete's relocated early in September 2005 to Revere where they are serving their award winning ribs, pulled pork and, my favorite, Pha's Asian slaw with crushed peanuts and her secret special dressing. You'll love this food and the friendly personal attention. Ask Pete how he barbecues his meats; he'll gladly explain in detail.

WINTHROP ARMS
(617) 846- 4000
130 GROVERS AVENUE, WINTHROP, MA 02152
DAVID GOLL and CONNIE GOLL

Our favorite restaurateurs on the entire East Coast are David Goll and Connie Goll. From our first meeting, they have impressed everyone we suggest go to Winthrop Arms with their manner of running this cozy dining establishment. The food is always just right, drinks generously poured by Chip and Jack, the place immaculate, every menu hand wiped after each use and the relaxing bar furnished with overstuffed couches and chairs reminiscent of the Brown Palace in Denver at the turn of the century. This will immediately become your choice for any occasion when you want a great dinner, Sunday brunch or weekday lunch. My favorites include Chicken Pot Pie, their perfectly aged steaks, prime rib (order the KING cut)and their sweet fried clam appetizer. And, if you can, save room for their home made bread pudding and grapenut custard.

"Dining with David" Overall 2006 & 2007 BEST of the BEST East Coast Restaurateurs and Restaurant -- David Goll and Connie Goll and The Winthrop Arms.

ZOE'S CAMBRIDGE
(617) 495-0055
1105 MASSACHUSETTS AVENUE, CAMBRIDGE, MA 02138
THEOPHILOS VALLAS

When Neal Cutler (proprietor of SIGNARAMA, Cambridge) recommended Zoe's, I quickly went to investigate. I loved the food, including the smoked salmon omelet but the topper was the succulent lamb he presented with breakfast that blew me away. I called Pat Whitley to share my "find" and Pat promptly suggested naming the dish "LAMB 'N EGGS (TM)". Thanks, Pat; it's now on the menu. If Theo's Dad is there, shake hands with a true veteran of the Boston restaurant scene, Nicholas Vallas. Listen to Pat Whitley every Sunday morning on RKO. For 30 years, Pat has enlightened, entertained and informed New England diners.

Chicago

ELI'S THE PLACE FOR STEAK
(312) 642-1393
IN THE CARRIAGE HOUSE
215 EAST CHICAGO AVENUE, CHICAGO, IL 60611

Just when you think the old world way of welcoming you to a restaurant has gone the way of the dinosaur, sometimes it does. Eli's, closed in July 2005, is diligently pursuing a new location after all these years. When they re-open, Dining with David will be there to cheer them on. Upon entering you were seated at a dark leather banquette and presented with your complimentary appetizer plate of chopped liver, chopped egg, and a myriad of breads including matzo, raisin pumpernickel, seeded rye, challah and bread sticks. The steaks are the best in Chicago, ribs are my favorite dish and the cheese cake among the best in the world. You can tell that we like this place and have since we first dined here in 1966 when it originally opened. Eli's son, Mark, now keeps the ship on a true course albeit in new harbors.

THE LITTLE CAFE

(818) 705- 8335
19207 VENTURA BLVD., TARZANA, CA 91356

TV and motion picture stars are everywhere in this "little cafe" with the big menu. Our personal choice is the three scoop tuna or chicken salad for lunch and the omelet of the day for breakfast. French toast is another winner.

Want to have some fun and superb authentic Mexican seafood, order the Huachinango (whole red snapper quickly deep fried and served on a sizzling platter) and you'll experience Howdy's idea of seafood theater as waiters and cooks sing out the Huachinango chant. And it's really, really great, too.

THE HOBBIT
(714) 997-1972
2932 EAST CHAPMAN AVENUE, ORANGE, CA 92869
Michael and Debra Philipe

From its opening in 1972, hence the phone number, we dined at least once each year to celebrate my birthday with the BEST prix fixe menu on the West Coast. Enter through the wine cellar in the basement, taste superb hors d'oeuvres and champagne and choose your wine pairing. Unsure what to order, let Michael and his wine sommelier select a wine or combo of four or five wines. During intermission after the first few courses, visit the chef in the kitchen and "see what's cooking!"
